Thus Jesus, by proclaiming John to be the new Elijah, was suggesting that the day of the Lord was at hand—they should be on the lookout for His appearance. Undoubtedly, many of the Jews of John’s day did in fact see him as the new Elijah. John certainly dressed the part. His wardrobe of a leather belt and garment of camel’s hair was strikingly similar to how Elijah dressed (2 Kings 1:8).
